H&SC OCR Unit 4 Safeguarding and Protecting Individuals

Unit 4 Theory and Revision Booklet – safeguarding and protecting individuals

Clients often feel distressed because they do not feel in control of the situation they find themselves in.  They need protection from harm.  In this unit you will learn about who is in need of protection because they are vulnerable.  This might include:

  • children
  • children in care
  • older people
  • people with disabilities
  • people with learning difficulties
  • people with mental illness
  • people who reside in care settings.

The effects of ill-treatment or abuse can cause clients to blame themselves for what is happening. It can result in:

  • lack of confidence
  • withdrawel
  • demonstrating abusive behaviour towards others
  • low self-esteem/self-concept
  • difficulty in communicating with others
  • a change in personality.

We will look at how ill-treatment and abuse and how this affects both the individual and the wider society.

Abuse – How can children be ill-treated or abused

Abuse –What is abuse – 1

Abuse – 2 Other types of possible abuse (sexual and financial)

Abuse – 3 Disabled People in the Care Setting

What is Neglect (PIES)

Protecting an individual includes empowering them or allowing the client to have as much control over their lives as possible. It involves helping them to participate in decision making and activities, respecting their opinions and providing choice.

If an individual is ill treated, the whole of society can be affected because more individuals will become dependent on others and there will be fewer people to take responsibility.  This could result in more people not wanting to work and fewer people being prepared to take responsibility in the community. In the long term this could lead to increased crime and lower standards of achievement in schools.  It could lead to abuse of alchol and drugs with individuals losing self-respect and feeling worthless, which in turn would lead them to inactivity and poverty.  Protecting and safeguarding individuals means promoting a positive attitude within each person. The diagram below outlines how this can be achieved.
